Portrayed by: Emilie de Ravin

Christine Hargensen better known as Chris Hargensen is one of two main antagonists of Carrie (2002). She is portrayed by Emilie de Ravin.

Although she is very cruel and manipulative, this version of Chris shows a marginal softer side and a greater capacity for remorse than in the 1976 or 2013 films. She hesitates while pulling the rope, just as her novel counterpart does.

History

Chris was portrayed by Emilie de Ravin and was more similar to the novel's Chris than Nancy Allen's portrayal was, showing more characteristics. In one scene, unique to the 2002 film, her manipulative side is demonstrated when she attempts to convince Carrie that Sue is the "enemy" under the guise of being nice to her.

Chris is introduced in the opening scene of the movie, expressing annoyance that Carrie missed the ball, and running up to her after the game to say "You suck." When Tina notices Carrie having her period and tells Chris, she and the other girls surround Carrie's cubicle to taunt her with a chant of "Period! Period!" before being stopped by Ms. Desjarden. Chris and the others then fill Carrie's locker with tampons and laugh at her when she opens it.

Chris and the other girls are subsequently punished by Ms. Desjarden with a week of detention, which they must attend on pain of being banned from the prom. Chris refuses and angrily storms out, yelling that "this isn't over". Her father, the "big-time lawyer" John Hargensen (Michael Kopsa) threatens to have the gym teacher fired and take the school to court if her prom privileges were not restored; however, Principal Morton counters by saying that he would battle Hargensen's suit on all fronts. He further states that Chris belongs in either military school or jail for her countless acts of cruelty against the "reject" student population.

Unlike the other versions, however, Chris is shown to have some capacity for remorse and a change of heart. Seeing how happy Carrie is being crowned queen at the prom, she is reluctant to drop the bucket of pig's blood all over her, but she succumbs to pressure from Billy to carry out their evil plot, and pulls the cord, resulting in Tommy's death and Carrie's telekinetic massacre.

While Chris is in a car with Billy, they spot Carrie on the street and he attempts to run her down, with Chris screaming at him to stop (unlike her 1976 and 2013 counterparts, both of whom try to kill Carrie). He doesn't listen, and as a result, Carrie stops the car and sends it smashing into a tree, killing Chris and Billy instantly.

Notes

  • Chris bullied not only Carrie, but also several other students, possibly including Norma.
  • She was penpals with student Donna Kellogg, whom she told via email about her intention to ruin the prom.
  • In comparison to her other incarnations, this version of Chris is the only one to show some sort of remorse, seeing as she hesitated to drop the bucket on Carrie and shouted at Billy not to run over her.
